Police Charge Man After Armed Robbery - Rutherford

A man has been charged following an alleged armed robbery near Maitland yesterday morning.

About 5.30am yesterday (Wednesday 27 May 2026), emergency services were called to a service station on the New England Highway at Rutherford, following reports of an armed robbery.

At the scene, police were told that a man allegedly threatened an employee with a knife before leaving the scene with cash.

Police attached to Port Stephens-Hunter Police District attended and commenced inquiries into the incident.

About 11.40am yesterday, police arrested a 23-year-old man at a home on Garwood Street, Rutherford.

During a search of the property, police allegedly located and seized cash and a knife.

The man was taken to Maitland Police Station where he was charged with robbery armed with offensive weapon.

He was refused bail to appear before Bail Division Court 2 today (Thursday 28 May 2026), where he was formally refused bail to appear before Newcastle Local Court on Wednesday 22 July 2026.
