Police charge man after fire at Mitcham school

Monash Crime Investigation Unit detectives have charged a 29-year-old man following a fire at a school in Mitcham this morning.

Emergency services were called to the blaze in the portable building on Whitehorse Road just after midnight.

Fire Rescue Victoria extinguished the blaze which caused extensive damage to one of the buildings and spread to nearby vegetation.

A Sale man was arrested nearby and charged with criminal damage by fire.

He will face the Melbourne Magistrates' Court this morning.
