Police charge man after hoax Triple Zero calls at Cairns

Cairns police have charged a 22-year-old Manoora man after he allegedly made repeated hoax calls to the emergency call services number Triple Zero (000).

Police will allege around 12.30am on Sunday morning, the man repeatedly called requesting emergency services attend a unit fire. It will be further alleged some of the calls were made in an abusive and harassing manner.

Two Queensland Fire and Emergency Services units attended the location of the alleged fire. Upon arrival it was determined there was no fire or emergency threat.

Investigations led to the man being taken into custody early Sunday morning, where he was later charged with 11 counts of improper use of emergency call service.

He was denied bail and is due to face Cairns Magistrates Court today (November 1).

Superintendent Rhys Newton said alleged hoax calls consume considerable resources and put other members of the community at risk in the event of a real emergency.

"Our Police Communication Centres across the state take more than 726,000 calls each year. These services save lives and it's important they are used in emergency situations only."

Police would like to remind the community that Triple Zero (000) is for life-threatening emergencies.
