Wyndham Crime Investigation Unit detectives charged a 38-year-old man following a pursuit in Werribee that left a police dog injured last week.
It is alleged police were patrolling Synnot Street, Werribee about 9pm on Thursday 23 February when they noticed a car being driven erratically.
Members followed the car and observed it allegedly drive onto the wrong side of the road and collide with a passing vehicle before continuing on and heading for Derrimut Road.
A pursuit was initiate for safety reasons and the car drove into a shopping centre carpark on Derrimut Road.
The car collided with two parked cars before the driver attempted to drive out of the carpark and crashed into a Dog Squad vehicle.
The driver then exited the car and attempted to run off but was apprehended by police.
The driver was taken to hospital under police guard while a police dog was taken to a vet after suffering facial and leg injuries in the collision and has since been released.
A Maidstone man has been charged with aggravated reckless exposure of police officer to risk by driving, reckless conduct endanger serious injury, dangerous driving whilst being pursued by police, fail to stop vehicle on police Direction (Evade), damaging an emergency service vehicle, theft of motor vehicle, drive in a manner dangerous, careless driving, fraudulently use reg label/plate and drive whilst disqualified.
He has been remanded to appear at Melbourne Magistrates' Court on 6 April.
