Police charge man after pursuit - Merewether

A man has been charged following an alleged pursuit through Merewether last night.

About 9.20pm (Tuesday 11 July 2023), officers from Newcastle City Police District were patrolling Llewellyn Street, Merewether, when they attempted to stop a Toyota Aurion.

When the Toyota allegedly failed to stop as directed, a pursuit was initiated, continuing onto Morgan Street and City Road where the vehicle collided with a Kia Cerato.

The impact of the collision caused the Toyota to roll onto its side, while pushing the Kia into the front of a healthcare business.

The driver of the Toyota, a 28-year-old man, and the driver of the Kia were transported to the John Hunter Hospital for the treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

During a search of the Toyota, police allegedly located an amount of a white crystal-like substance, believed to be methamphetamine. It was seized for forensic examination.

Following inquiries, a Firearms Prohibition Order Compliance search was conducted at a home on Douglas Way, Hamilton South, about 10.30am today (Wednesday 12 July 2023), where a firearm part and ammunition were seized.

Upon discharge from hospital, the 28-year-old man was escorted to Newcastle City Police District where he was charged with police pursuit - not stop - drive dangerously, learner not accompanied by driver/police officer/tester, supply prohibited drug - indictable quantity, possess weapon contrary to prohibition order, acquire etc ammunition subject to prohibition order, and acquire firearm part subject to prohibition order.

He was refused bail to appear before Newcastle Local Court tomorrow (Thursday 13 July 2023).
