Police charge man after St Albans sexual assault

Detectives from the Sexual Crimes Squad last night charged a man following an alleged sexual assault in St Albans earlier this month.

A 49-year-old Epping man was arrested in Epping yesterday and subsequently charged with rape, sexual penetration of a child under 16 and bail offences.

He will face Melbourne Magistrates' Court today.

The charges follow an incident on 14 December where a teenage girl was sexually assaulted.

It's alleged the man was sitting in a vehicle on Main Road West, near St Albans Railway Station, when he approached the teen about 11.45pm.

She was subsequently sexually assaulted and following the incident, she approached a nearby property and the resident called triple zero (000).

Police are keen to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or noticed any suspicious activity in the area around this time.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppers.com.au
