Police charge man after starting a fire in Sydney CBD

A man will face court today after being charged for allegedly lighting a small fire in a Sydney park during today's total fire ban.

Just before 6.30am (Saturday 30 November 2019), police and Fire and Rescue NSW attended Macquarie Place Park, at the intersection of Bridge and Loftus Streets, following reports of a small deliberately-lit grass fire.

Police spoke with a man at the park who was allegedly found in possession of a cigarette lighter.

The 31-year-old man was arrested and taken to Day Street Police Station, where he was charged with fail to comply with total fire ban order, cause or set fire to the property of another, or Crown, fail to comply with terms of notice erected by council, and give a false name.

He has been refused bail to appear at Parramatta Bail Court today (Saturday 30 November 2019).
