A man has been charged after a police officer was assaulted during an arrest in Sydney's inner west on Wednesday.
About 1.20pm (Wednesday 10 March 2021), officers attached to Inner West Police Area Command were on patrol in Camden Street, Newtown, when they noticed a man acting suspiciously.
As part of inquiries, it was established the man was wanted for a breach of bail.
While police were speaking to the man, he allegedly punched an officer in the head and attempted to flee. A wrestle ensued, where the man elbowed the officer in the head on numerous occasions, before breaking free.
Officers followed the man to Station Street, where he entered a house that was being renovated.
The Petersham man was located at the rear of the house where he armed himself with a hammer.
After negotiations with officers, the 47-year-old man was arrested. He was taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital for treatment of a head injury sustained in the scuffle.
A male constable was taken to RPA where he is receiving treatment for concussion and swelling to his face. The male constable was released from hospital and is recovering at home.
Following inquiries, the 47-year-old man was charged with aggravated break and enter and commit serious indictable offence knowing people to be in there, assault police officer in execution of duty without causing actual bodily harm and assault police officer in execution of duty causing actual bodily harm.
The man appeared before Newtown Local Court in a bedside sitting yesterday (Thursday 11 March 2021) and was formally refused bail, to appear before the same Court today (Friday 12 March 2021).
