Police Investigate Attempted Armed Robbery At Southbank

Melbourne Divisional Response Unit detectives are investigating an attempted armed robbery in Southbank last month.

It is understood a 33-year-old Werribee man was withdrawing cash from an ATM at a licensed premises when he was approached by an unknown man on Saturday, 30 November.

The man attempted to snatch the cash from the victim's hand and was unsuccessful.

Police were told the offender then attempted to hit the man with the axe and missed.

He was not physically injured during the incident.

The offender fled on foot.

Police have released CCTV and images of a man who they believe may be able to assist with their enquiries.

The man is Caucasian, aged in his 30s and is described as being of medium build with a short dark beard.

He was wearing a black 'Post Modern' jacket with a light blue shirt and dark tie. He was also wearing light blue jeans, a black baseball cap, black shoes and a black bum bag. He also had a dark canvas shopping trolley.

Police believe the same man was involved in another incident in Hoppers Crossing on Sunday, 1 December.

It is understood a staff member offered to assist a man in a store on Heaths Road in Hoppers Crossing, before the man produced a hammer about 11.20am.

The offender threatened the staff member, a 47-year-old Aintree man, then stole the items and fled the scene.

The Aintree man was not physically injured.
