A Wilson Liberal and Nationals Government will crack down on escalating violence in Victorian hospitals by deploying Protective Services Officers (PSOs) at several major hospitals across Victoria.
Under Labor, almost 24,000 violent incidents were reported in our health services in 2024-25 - that's 65 incidents every single day where a nurse, doctor, or health worker is abused, threatened, or assaulted at work.
Criminal offending in hospitals is also on the rise, with total offences recorded almost doubling in the past two years.
Under the Liberals and Nationals' plan, 70 PSOs will be deployed for a two-year pilot at seven major hospitals across Victoria.
PSO teams will provide an additional security presence in and around hospitals, respond to serious incidents, assist with prisoner guarding where appropriate and be available to escort hospital workers to their vehicles.
The PSOs will work with hospital management on the deployment model that works best for them.
Leader of the Opposition, Jess Wilson, said: "Doctors, nurses, and healthcare staff should be able to do their jobs safely so that they can provide Victorians with the care they need.
"Almost 24,000 violent incidents in our hospitals in a year in simply unacceptable. That's why my team has a plan to tackle the surge in violence that is plaguing our hospitals.
"A world-class health system must be a safe health system, and our plan to place PSOs in busy hospitals will support staff to deliver the quality care Victorians deserve."
Shadow Minister for Health, Georgie Crozier, said: "Health workers need greater protection. The safety of our health workers is paramount - you should feel safe, feel protected, whether you are triaging a patient in ED or walking to your car after ending your shift."
Shadow Minister for Police and Corrections, Brad Battin, said: "PSOs at crime hotspot hospitals will strengthen security around the clock.
"PSOs have the powers and training needed to respond to the increase in violent behaviour occurring in hospitals and take appropriate action to keep staff and patients safe."
