Police lay charges - Aggravated assault - Groote Eylandt 3 April

Northern Territory Police have charged 3 men after an incident on Groote Eylandt over the weekend.

At 10:15 pm on Saturday, the men, aged 18, 18 and 20, allegedly threatened and assaulted a couple who were camping at a remote location.

The men were armed with weapons and caused significant damage to the couple's vehicle before assaulting the couple in their tent. Both the male and female victim received blunt force injuries and required treatment from the local clinic.

The offenders were known to the victims.

Local Police arrested the trio the next day, where they were each charged with:

  • Deprive a person of their liberty x 2
  • Damage to property x 2
  • Aggravated assault x 6
  • Robbery - Aggravated
  • Armed with an offensive weapon
  • Attempt to pervert the course of justice
  • Make a threat to kill a person

All three were remanded to appear in Darwin Local Court tomorrow.
