Police lay charges - Aggravated assault in Darwin 2 September

Northern Territory Police have arrested two people in relation to a disturbance in Darwin City on Wednesday.

At around 6:30pm, police responded to reports of a domestic disturbance between a 30-year-old male and 22-year-old female in the vicinity of Harriet Place and Smith Street in Darwin City.

Both parties have allegedly then entered a business nearby, with the male threatening staff with a weapon. The female has allegedly assaulted an employee with a blunt weapon before being ejected from the premises.

Police attended a short time later and arrested the pair nearby.

Detectives from Strike Force Lyra have since charged the 22-year-old female with:

  • Aggravated assault
  • Assault a worker
  • Armed with an offensive weapon
  • Disorderly behaviour in a public place
  • Engage in violent conduct

She was bailed to appear in Darwin Local Court on 8 September 2022.

The 30-year-old male was charged with:

  • Choking, strangling or suffocating
  • Armed with an offensive weapon
  • Disorderly behaviour in a public place
  • Engage in violent conduct

He was remanded to appear in Darwin Local Court today.

Senior Sergeant Robin Kidney said, "This was completely unacceptable behaviour that these workers were subjected to.

"Anyone experiencing domestic or family violence is urged to reach out o 131 444 or in an emergency to call 000."
