Police lay charges - Assault police at Tennant Creek 15 April

Northern Territory Police have charged a man in relation to assaulting police in Tennant Creek overnight.

At around 11:40pm, police were responding to an intoxicated male outside a business on Paterson Street.

While police were talking to the man, he has allegedly become verbally abusive and began throwing liquid at officers.

While being arrested, the man has allegedly assaulted the officers, spitting in the face and biting one officer.

The officers received minor injuries, with one requiring disease testing.

The 37-year-old was arrested at the scene and has since been charged with:

  • 3 x Assault police
  • 1 x Resist police
  • 1 x Disorderly behaviour

He was bailed to appear in Tennant Creek Local Court on 24 April 2022.

Acting Commander Kirsten Engels said, "Our members are out on the streets everyday protecting the community and rendering assistance to those in need.

"In attempting to help, officers have been assaulted and spat on in what can only be described as a display of disgusting behaviour.

"People that assault police ought to be ashamed of themselves, it is unacceptable and this man will now face court for his actions."
