Police Lay Charges - Assault Police In Darwin 23 March

A 35-year-old male has assaulted a police officer while being taken into custody on Saturday in Darwin.

Around 9:35am, two police officers conducting duties at an evacuation shelter in Marrara issued a Notice to Appear to a 38-year-old male after he was found to be in possession of a trafficable amount of cannabis. A second male, aged 35-years-old, later approached the police after they had seized the cannabis and became disorderly and aggressive before leaving the area.

Police subsequently identified the second male and found he was subject to an outstanding arrest for a matter relating to a domestic violence offence. Shortly before 11am, police located him on Henry Wrigley Drive and attempted to bring him into custody. During the arrest, he allegedly resisted and assaulted one of the officers, grabbing them by the hair and dragging them to the ground and striking their face.

He was brought into custody and conveyed to the Palmerston Watch House without further incident.

The 35-year-old has since been charged with:

  • Assault a member of the Police Force
  • Resist Police in execution of duty
  • Aggravated assault

He was remanded to appear in Darwin Local Court today.

The officer suffered minor injuries and did not require medical attention.
