Northern Territory Police have charged a 30-year-old man in relation to dangerous driving in Alice Springs on 12 February 2023.
At 2:30am, Southern Traffic Operations detected the speed of an approaching vehicle at 89km/h in a 40km/h zone.
The vehicle was pulled over and the man was subject to an initial roadside breath test, where he tested positive.
He was arrested and conveyed to the Alice Springs Watch House where he was unable to complete a breath analysis due to his level of intoxication.
He was later charged with:
- Failing to Supply a Sufficient Sample of Breath for Breath Analysis
- Driving at a dangerous speed - exceed speed limit by 45 kilometres.
He was bailed to appear in Alice Springs Local Court on 1 March 2023.
Senior Sergeant Rob Engels said "This is a frightening example of someone selfishly putting everyone on our roads at risk.
"This person has not only made the terrible and dangerous decision to drive whilst intoxicated, he has then sped along a heavily used street at more than twice the speed limit.
"Random breath testing and speed detection will be continuing on Territory Roads as we continue to work to combat the Fatal Five and support good driver behaviours."
