Police lay charges - Property and driving offences - Northern Suburbs

Detectives from Strike Force Trident have arrested a 19-year-old man for alleged property offences following a pursuit in Wagaman yesterday.

At around 1:30am, the man and another unknown male allegedly gained access to a residence in Brinkin via an unlocked door. While inside, the pair took keys to the victim's vehicle and other items including a wallet and alcohol. The pair used the car keys to take a vehicle.

At around 3:30am, the stolen vehicle was sighted by police in Wagaman. Police attempted to apprehend the vehicle however it failed to stop and police commenced a pursuit. Police observed the driver engaging in dangerous behaviour including travelling on the wrong side of the road.

The vehicle sustained a flat tyre when it mounted a curb in Alawa and the men fled on foot. Police apprehended the 19-year-old who was found in possession of a knife.

The 19-year-old was charged with:

  • aggravated unlawful entry (dwelling - night)
  • stealing
  • aggravated unlawful use of a motor vehicle
  • learner driver drive unaccompanied
  • drive manner dangerous during a pursuit
  • going armed in public.

He was bailed to appear in Darwin Local Court on 28 April 2020.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Mark Bland said, "This is a timely reminder for residents to make sure their properties are secure. We don't want to make it easy for offenders to enter our homes."
