Police lay charges - Weapons offences

Northern Territory Police have arrested two males, aged 17 and 19, for assault police and weapons offences.

Around 10:30am today, police were investigating unlawful entries which occurred overnight in the West Arnhem region. While outside a residence, police were confronted by a 17-year-old male who was allegedly armed with spears. It is alleged the male threw the spears at the police car, causing damage. The male then fled from the location. The police officers were not injured.

Police enquiries found the 17-year-old and 19-year-old males had been involved in a disturbance with edged weapons prior to police arrival. Both were arrested and the 17-year-old received treatment for minor injuries.

Senior Sergeant Michael Milde said, "This was an extremely dangerous incident which had the potential to cause serious harm to all persons involved. The local officers involved conducted themselves extremely professionally to bring the incident to a safe conclusion."

The 17-year-old will be dealt with under the provisions of the Youth Justice Act 2005.

The 19-year-old was charged with armed with offensive and controlled weapons in a public place.

He will appear in court at a later date.
