Police lay drug trafficking charges at Gold Coast and Brisbane

Police have charged a 48-year-old Thornlands man with trafficking methylamphetamine and heroin following a vehicle intercept on the Gold Coast yesterday (January 2), resulting in the seizure of $2 million worth of drugs.

At around 3.50pm police attempted to intercept a vehicle on the M1 motorway at Elanora. It is alleged the male driver, and sole occupant, failed to stop and sped off.

The man's vehicle allegedly collided with an unmarked police vehicle on K P McGrath Drive, Elanora, where it again failed to stop, continuing to Currumbin where the man abandoned the car near the intersection of Thrower and Hooper drives, fleeing on foot.

It will be further alleged the man dumped a suitcase he had been carrying into a nearby garbage bin before he was intercepted and arrested by police in Hooper Street.

Police will allege the suitcase contained ten kilograms of methylamphetamine and a search of the man located a quantity of heroin.

The seized drugs have an estimated street value of $2 million.

Police have charged the man with 30 counts of supplying dangerous drugs, two counts of trafficking dangerous drugs, possessing dangerous drugs, and one count each of serious assault police officer, evade police, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, and possessing anything used in the commission of crime.

He was denied police bail and is due to face Brisbane Magistrates Court today.
