Police make arrest over indecent assault in Alice Springs

A 30-year-old man who indecently assaulted a woman in a car park in Alice Springs yesterday, has been arrested and charged.

Just after 11:30am a woman was walking in the Gregory Terrace car park when she was approached by a man who is alleged to have indecently assaulted her. The woman punched the man twice to the face, causing him to run from the scene.

Provided with an excellent description of the man, police were able to utilise CCTV systems to follow the offender who then got into a taxi and left the area.

Officers located and arrest the man at an Sadadeen address, he was taken to the Alice Springs Watch House and charged with one count of Commit an Act of Gross Indecency. He was remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear before the Alice Springs Local Court today.

Police urge anyone who may have witnessed this incident, to contact them on 131 444 or report it anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 and reference PROMIS number 9430513.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Carmen Butcher said the victim told police there were witnesses to the incident.

"In this instance the victim screamed at the man, which in any case would have brought attention to what was occurring. We urge anyone who may have been in that car park on Gregory Terrace at the time, to contact police. Any information is of assistance to police."

Inquiries continue as to whether this is the same man who approached a woman on Sturt Terrace and behaved indecently on Tuesday afternoon.
