Police search Lake Eildon for missing swimmer

Police Search and Rescue members are coordinating a search for a man who went missing while swimming in Lake Eildon on New Year's Day.

Officers have been told the man was swimming with friends, near Jerusalem Creek Track, when he appeared to get into difficulty and disappeared underwater about 4.30pm.

When the 34-year-old man failed to resurface his friends raised the alarm.

Local police with assistance of the Air Wing, Water Police and other emergency services scoured the lake and foreshore well into the night.

Due to the conditions the water search was temporarily suspended overnight however police remain at the scene.

Police divers, with the assistance of local police and State Emergency Service personnel, will resume their search for the missing swimmer at first light.
