Pollution Incident Strikes South West Rocks Boat Ramp

Kempsey Shire Council

Council has been advised of a suspected pollution incident at Back Creek boat ramp, South West Rocks.

It is alleged shortly after 8:30am on Tuesday 19 December, a vehicle with two Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBC) containers on a trailer was seen emptying the contents onto the boat ramp, which subsequently entered Back Creek.

The milky white substance is unknown at this stage and could potentially be hazardous.

Signage is being installed to advise residents to avoid swimming in Back Creek until the water is deemed safe.

Council is working with EPA and NSW Health to identify appropriate sampling methods, given the substance is unknown at this time.

If any community members have information regarding the vehicle in question, including photographs or description of the vehicle, they are asked to contact Council on (02) 6566 3200.
