Path Clear For Oceanway As Community Backs Completion

Mayor Tom Tate at Broadbeach Oceanway

The City's consultation on completing the Oceanway has shown strong community support, with a large majority backing a continuous 36-kilometre coastal pathway from Coolangatta to The Spit.

Mayor Tom Tate said that of the more than 3,500 validated survey responses, 90 per cent supported delivery of the remaining sections, representing approximately 11.75 kilometres of shared pathway.

"This result speaks for itself," Mayor Tom Tate said.

"The community has made it clear they value the Oceanway and the benefits it provides for both residents and visitors.

"We now have confidence to continue progressing plans to complete the missing links."

There are currently five remaining gaps in the Oceanway network at Main Beach, Mermaid Beach, Burleigh Heads, Palm Beach and Currumbin.

People from all divisions participated in the consultation, with more than 80 per cent of respondents who were beachfront residents supporting completion of the Oceanway.

Respondents identified improved safety, better connectivity, greater accessibility and enhanced active transport opportunities as key benefits.

Environmental protection was identified as a priority by 41 per cent of respondents, while 39 per cent said strong environmental safeguards would increase their confidence in the project's delivery.

The City is undertaking a range of technical, environmental and coastal engineering assessments to support State and Federal environmental approval processes ahead of any future stages.

All future planning and design will consider coastal erosion, storm impacts, limited available space, private property interfaces and the need to protect sensitive coastal environments.

"We're listening to all community feedback, and the insights received will help inform next steps," Mayor Tate added.

Construction is due to start on Federation Walk Oceanway and Mermaid Beach North Oceanway in 2027 as part of the Oceanway Completion Strategy.

Consultation on the Oceanway was undertaken from 3 August to 24 August 2026 and included multiple community pop-up events.
