The Tasmanian Government, Ponting Foundation and Cricket Tasmania are proud to announce more than $284,000 has been raised for Tasmanian children and young people affected by cancer through the inaugural Ponting Foundation Hobart Hurricanes fundraising match.
Big Bash League (BBL) 2025 Champions, the Hobart Hurricanes, faced off against the Sydney Sixers in January for the first-ever Ponting Foundation fundraising match.
The match is set to become a yearly fixture in the BBL calendar, with the second Ponting Foundation charity match to take place on 14 January 2026 between the Hurricanes and Brisbane Heat.
The funds raised will provide support for Tasmanian patients and their families, with a new agreement signed between the Ponting Foundation and the Tasmanian Government confirming how proceeds will be distributed in the State's health system.
Under the partnership, funds will help families with meaningful support throughout their journey of childhood cancer.
Money will also go towards enhancing Tasmanian paediatric oncology services to reduce the need for intrastate and interstate travel where possible, as well as supporting research into childhood cancer.
Minister for Health, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Bridget Archer, said the Ponting Foundation's contribution would make a real difference, as we work together to move our state forward.
"This is another fantastic fundraising effort by the Ponting Foundation to support children and young people affected by cancer," Minister Archer said.
"The funds raised will assist families right across Tasmania during the incredibly difficult experience of a childhood cancer diagnosis, helping with travel, treatment and appointments, while also enhancing services and contributing to cancer research.
"Importantly, we have now formalised the Tasmanian Government's long-standing partnership with the Ponting Foundation to ensure these funds – and those raised in the future – are directed where they are most needed."
Liberal Member for Clark, Marcus Vermey, said the effort showed the strength of the Tasmanian community.
"For families across Tasmania, a childhood cancer diagnosis is incredibly tough," Mr Vermey said.
"The money raised through this match will help ease that burden by providing practical support at a time it is most needed."
Ponting Foundation co-founder Ricky Ponting said raising almost $300k at the inaugural Ponting Foundation charity match is a fantastic result and will make a huge difference for Tasmanian families going through a childhood cancer journey, but there is more we can all do!
"Rianna and I are proud to announce the second Ponting Foundation charity match will take place on 14 January next year, with the reigning champion Hobart Hurricanes taking on the Brisbane Heat," Mr Ponting said.
"I encourage everyone to get involved in the game and our broader fund raising program that will be announced next month."
