PORT find weapons, knives and ammunition after Ballarat intercept

Police from the Public Order Response Team (PORT) uncovered a haul of weapons, ammunition and cannabis following a routine intercept in Ballarat last night.

The officers were patrolling Victoria Park when the noticed a car in Cedar Avenue without one brake light about 7pm.

PORT intercepted the red Holden Commodore sedan and spoke to the driver before they noticed a knife in the vehicle.

A subsequent search of the driver and car uncovered a number of items including knives, machetes, hatchets, a sawn-off bolt action rifle, balaclavas, gloves, ammunition and a garrotte.

A search of the 37-year-old's home revealed cannabis plants, more weapons, another firearm and a modified spear gun.

The Golden Point man has been charged with prohibited person possess a firearm (x2) prohibited person possess a prescribed item namely a silencer and scope, possess ammunition, cultivate and possess cannabis and other weapons offences.

It is expected the man will be remanded to appear at Ballarat Magistrates' Court today, Monday 1 March 2021.
