Port Stephens Council voted unanimously to investigate the benefits and requirements of securing world-renowned ECO Destination Certification.
The initiative was introduced by a Mayoral Minute at Council's 28 July 2026 meeting, requesting Council staff to evaluate the long-term environmental and economic impacts of the global program.
Administered by Ecotourism Australia, the certification assesses a region's commitment to high-quality, sustainable practices and eco-friendly tourism. The independent evaluation considers sustainable destination management, environmental stewardship, cultural heritage protection and the community benefits generated from tourism.
Port Stephens Mayor Leah Anderson said Port Stephens' distinctive natural environment and rich cultural heritage are a major drawcard for visitors and much-loved by the community.
"Port Stephens pristine environment and wildlife attract more than two million visitors each year, contributing over $840 million annually to our regional visitor economy.
"From Port Stephens-Great Lakes Marine Park and the Worimi Conservation Lands to Tomaree National Park and our unique coastal and hinterland landscapes, Port Stephens is an ecological and cultural wonder. Considering ECO Destination Certification is a logical next step," Mayor Anderson said.
"Protecting and enhancing the natural environment is a key priority for both Council and our community. That's why we have committed $2.3 million over four years to help protect our natural environment through Special Rate Variation funds," Mayor Anderson said.
Destination Port Stephens Chief Executive Officer, Jo Thomas, said the Port Stephens enduring 'Incredible By Nature' campaign helps grow year-round visitation including off-peak ecotourism and cultural attractions.
"Travellers are increasingly seeking out destinations that are committed to protecting the environment and supporting local communities."
"ECO Destination Certification could differentiate Port Stephens further and shine a brighter international light on the unique natural environment and cultural heritage that support our visitor economy," said Jo Thomas.
Potential benefits of ECO Destination Certification include enhanced destination reputation, increased destination appeal, stronger sustainability credentials for destination marketing and access to a global network of certified sustainable destinations.
Council staff will prepare a report for the Mayor and Councillors to consider at a future Council meeting.
