  • Governor Beazley's term extended to June 30
  • Served as 33rd Governor of Western Australia for more than four years
  • Premier Mark McGowan has formally acknowledged and thanked His Excellency the Honourable Kim Beazley AC for his service to the State in his role as Western Australian Governor.

The 33rd Governor will relinquish the role as the Queen's representative in WA on June 30.

Kim Beazley will have served as Governor for more than four years, after he was sworn in on May 1, 2018.

Born in Subiaco, Mr Beazley served for nearly three decades in the Australian Federal Parliament in roles including Special Minister of the State, Federal Minister, Deputy Prime Minister, Federal Leader of the Australian Labor Party and Federal Leader of the Opposition.

After his retirement from politics, Mr Beazley was appointed Winthrop Professor in the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Western Australia, as well as Chancellor of the Australian National University.

Mr Beazley also served as Ambassador to the United States of America for six years.

Police Commissioner Chris Dawson will be sworn in as the State's 34th Governor in July.

As stated by Premier Mark McGowan:

"I want to formally acknowledge the enormous contribution Kim Beazley has made in his many, many years of service to the people of Western Australia.

"The Beazley name is synonymous with Western Australia.

"When I announced Kim Beazley's appointment as our State's 33rd Governor, I said at the time that he was a natural leader, a true asset to WA and someone who will advocate in the best interests of the State.

"I am proud to say that Governor Beazley fulfilled that promise and so much more.

"Mr Beazley has conducted himself in the role with dignity and grace. He has provided wise counsel to Government, especially during the difficult years of the pandemic.

"He has modernised the role of Governor into becoming an advocate for WA.

"On behalf of all Western Australians, I would like to thank outgoing Governor His Excellency the Honourable Kim Beazley AC for the decades he has served the people of our State, whether in politics, education or other areas of life.

"I also thank his wife Susie and their family for all of their service to WA over this period.

"I would also like to congratulate Chris Dawson on being announced as the 34th Governor of Western Australia."
