Premier tries to wipe history on dud GST deal

Tasmanian Labor

Premier and Treasurer Peter Gutwein has attempted to wipe history regarding Tasmania's dud GST deal.

Shadow Treasurer Shane Broad said it was clear Mr Gutwein had forgotten about his support for the new deal in 2018.

"Today in Estimates the Premier repeatedly denied he ever supported the current GST deal, even ludicrously saying his government had opposed it from day one," Dr Broad said.

"Yet it doesn't take a rocket scientist to look back and see what Mr Gutwein thought of the deal at the time. In a 2018 press release Mr Gutwein said "Make no mistake the Tasmania Government pushed hard to get this deal…" yet he is now saying his government was opposed to it from day 1.

"Tasmania worked hard for a good GST deal, before Will Hodgman and Peter Gutwein sold us down the river.

"The Liberals claimed the new deal would get Tasmania an additional $112 million in GST funds, but instead it will be nowhere near this. They claimed that our revenues would be secure, but they clearly are not.

"The Premier must explain what he really thinks about this deal. And if he is so strongly opposed to it, what's he going to do to fix it?"
