Tasmanian Premier's Speech

Liberal Tasmania
  • Jeremy Rockliff Premier, Minister for Tourism, Minister for Trade and Major Investment, Member for Braddon
  • Thank you so much Sandra.

You and our beautiful girls are my strength.

    And thanks to you all!

    Our wonderful team of candidates.

    My fellow MPs.

And each and every one of you putting yourself forward to serve the people of Tasmania.

    I could not be prouder.

    To the Liberal Party,

President Michael McKenna, State Director, Sam McQuestin and the party faithful - we couldn't do this without you

And all your family, your friends, your supporters.

    What a team!

    Thank you!

    But I must say:

None of us wanted to be here!

Indeed, there's only one person who has forced us to be here.

There's only one person who forced this election on the people of Tasmania.

An election they did not want and do not need.

Dean Winter forced this election for one reason - himself.

He saw an opportunity to get rid of me.

And he didn't care how he did it.

But it didn't quite work out.

    Dean, I'm still here!

    Fighting for Tasmania.

Fighting for the state I love.

Fighting to stop another Labor Green government.

Because we know how that worked out!

It brought Tasmania to its knees.

We've worked so hard to restore our state.

And we're not going to let the state we love go backwards.

Because this is what we know.

We know Labor need the Greens to govern.

They cannot do it any other way.

And that means more deals, more delays, more political games.

    It means higher taxes.

It means cuts to the services Tasmanians need and deserve.

While Labor plays political games, my team is focused on one thing: delivering our plan for Tasmanian families.

You cannot build a future on division and political games.

And you cannot trust a bloke who puts himself and the Labor party before Tasmania.

Tasmanians are sick of the political games.

    They want action.

    They want stability.

    And they want it now.

That's what we are offering: a clear plan, a united team, and the leadership to get on with the job.

While Labor and the Greens play games, we've been delivering better healthcare, more housing, and responsible cost-of-living relief.

We've got a clear plan and it's working.

We can deliver the services Tasmania needs because our economy is strong.

    We have a strong economy.

And we have a growing economy.

Under a Liberal Government, our economy has grown 26%, in just over a decade.

We now have an economy that is valued at over 40 billion dollars.

And in the past 12 months we have really shown that our economy packs a punch - across many indicators.

We achieved the highest wage growth in the entire nation.

We've delivered the highest business conditions and confidence in the nation.

And - proudly - we have achieved the lowest ever unemployment rate in this State.

    An all-time low.

Never in Tasmania's history has unemployment been as low as it is today.

And we have created industries that have higher-than-national-average productivity.

Including Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing, and our health care and our social services.

What all of these indicators show is that our plan is clearly working.

Our Plan to take Tasmania and its economy to the next level.

We know that a strong economy means better services, more jobs, and greater opportunities for all Tasmanians.

More confident and resilient businesses, and safer and more prosperous communities.

And that leads to better outcomes for each of us.

    And for all of us.

To deliver a strong economy, we need certainty.

    We need stability.

And this is what a Majority Liberal Tasmanian Government provides.

Here's the truth: we can't finish the job without a majority Liberal Government.

Without a majority, it means Labor and the Greens can get in the way with more deals, more delays, more political games.

A majority Liberal Government is the only way to keep Tasmania moving forward with certainty and stability.

Let's talk for a moment about independents.

I know many Tasmanians feel good about voting for an independent.

    I get that.

But look at how it's worked out.

Despite our very best efforts, because of political games played by Labor, the Greens and some independents, it has been a recipe for instability and uncertainty.

Independents - especially those single-issue independents - are not the answer.

They are threatening the very future of our state.

They will continue to create uncertainty.

    Division.

And sadly, hurl us straight back to where we have been.

On a spiral of election, after election, after election.

In challenging times, that's not how you ensure prosperity.

That's how you ensure economic disaster and people losing their jobs.

    That's not what I want.

I want to keep building a better Tasmania.

To make this very special place even better.

Over recent days, I've outlined how we will continue to deliver our clear plan on health, on housing and on economic development.

We are making record investments in the Tasmanian health system.

    $10 million dollars a day.

We have hired five thousand nurses, midwives and healthcare workers.

And of course, there is more to do.

Today, I am proud to announce the next step in delivering world-class healthcare in Tasmania's north - in line with our current LGH Master Plan.

A re-elected Liberal Government will build a brand new, seven-storey care complex at the Launceston General Hospital.

It will provide an extra 250 beds.

It will provide co-location to the LGH main campus, connecting to vital services, such as the brand new helipad.

It will enable health services to meet expected future growth in demand.

It will provide a major expansion and refurbishment of inpatient units to meet contemporary health facility design standards.

This means more single rooms, along with the expansion of cancer services.

Importantly, the new health complex will unlock co-location opportunities for public and private services - in line with the master plan.

This will future-proof hospital services in the North and help to attract and retain health professionals, including specialists, to the region.

Building work will be expected to commence in 2028 following completion of the Northern Mental Health Precinct and be completed by 2030.

We will also be boosting vital services in the North West.

And I will have more to say on that in the coming days.

Both these important community investments are fully costed. And fully funded.

Always remember this: a Labor-Green Government shut down hospital wards across the North and North West.

And they will do it again.

Labor and the Greens will make you pay.

Tasmanians have worked together over the last decade:

    To build better health care.

    To build better schools.

To build the bridges and the roads to keep the state moving.

    To build a strong economy.

To ensure no Tasmanian is left behind.

Ladies and Gentlemen, friends and colleagues.

I say this to all Tasmanians.

This election comes down to one clear choice: a strong Liberal team with a real plan - a united team with the leadership to get on with it.

Against a self-serving Labor-Greens government with more deals, delays, division and political games.

For the sake of all Tasmanians.

    Let's get on with it.

Let's finish the job for Tasmania.
