Preserving Highlands Heritage for Future Resilience

Wingecarribee Shire

As we work together to shape an ever more enriching place to live and work, our community members are set to experience a dynamic cultural tapestry and enriched library services as part of Council's future plans for our Shire. All while paying respects to our unique heritage. First Nations collaborations, a resilience blueprint, library programs, and community safety are some of the key initiatives that have been announced in our 2023/24 draft Operational Plan.

The document, now on exhibition for community consideration, outlines proposals that aim to strengthen community bonds and create nurturing neighbourhoods that will foster a legacy of resilience and collective well-being for years to come.

Wingecarribee Shire Council's Director Communities and Place, Adan Davis, expressed his enthusiasm for the forthcoming plans and emphasised the significant benefits WSC anticipates. "It's easy to imagine the positive and resounding impact these initiatives will have on our community as we work together toward creating an environment where every resident feels connected and engaged," Mr Davis said.

Collaboration with First Nations peoples is a key aspect of the WSC Indigenous Recognition Commitment. Through close collaboration, WSC seeks to honour and celebrate the rich cultural heritage and contributions Indigenous communities have made within our region.

Together with residents, we aim to build on our strengths as a resilient community that can effectively respond to challenges and bounce back stronger than ever. The focus will be on prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery, as identified in the 'Resilience Connect' blueprint.

To ensure the safety and security of residents, an updated Community Safety Plan will be created to address emerging challenges and prioritise community well-being and reflect the evolving needs of the diverse Wingecarribee population.

As a celebration of local heritage, an Oral History project will be launched in the Shire's Northern Villages. This initiative will capture the unique stories and experiences that shape the fabric of our villages, cultivating a deeper understanding of their cultural identity and history. Place Profiles will also be created for Bundanoon, Hill Top and Balmoral Villages to understand the "story of place".

In line with the commitment to outstanding library services, a new Integrated Library Management System will be introduced to streamline operations and enhance the library experience. There will continue to be a range of engaging library programs including Book Week, Summer Reading courses, School Holiday programs and HSC Study Sessions.
