Property Council Backs Cabinet's Urban, Transit Focus

Property Council welcomes balanced national cabinet outcome and focus

on supporting public transport and cities

The Property Council of Australia says Australia's cities must remain central to national economic policy, with decisions taken today by National Cabinet taking a welcome 4-step strategic approach to supporting confidence, productivity and economic resilience. The Property Council also welcomed support for public transport as a pillar of workforce participation and economic activity.

"Cities are the engines of national performance and wellbeing," said Property Council Chief Executive Mike Zorbas.

"Buoyant, functioning cities underpin national productivity, small business activity and represent a positive return on public infrastructure investment.

"Affordable public transport trumps blunt work from home mandates, particularly when productivity and collaboration matter. We commend the public transport measures initiated by state governments over the past week."

The Property Council cautioned against policy responses that undermine confidence or disrupt delivery at the same time governments are seeking stronger growth and higher productivity.

"If further support becomes necessary, governments should provide assistance directly rather than interfering in pre-existing commercial arrangements," Mr Zorbas said.

"Preserving the sanctity of contracts is fundamental to investment, confidence and the delivery of housing, infrastructure and jobs."

National Cabinet discussion reinforces the need for consistent policy settings as governments continue to rely on the private sector to deliver national priorities.

The Property Council will continue to engage constructively with governments to support economic stability, protect jobs and ensure Australia's cities remain strong, connected and productive.
