Protecting Kids From Meningococcal, Providing Cost-of-living Relief For Families

Liberal Tasmania

A life-saving meningococcal B vaccination program will be free for all Tasmanian infants under a re-elected Tasmanian Liberal Government, providing cost-of-living relief and saving families up to $300.

The vaccination program will offer free, early protection to all newborn children from 6 weeks to 12 months, and a catch-up immunisation for children over 12 months but under 2 years who have not already completed a course.

Premier Jeremy Rockliff said our Government is easing the pressure on family budgets, while safeguarding the health and future of every Tasmanian child.

"Our Government is getting on with the job of protecting our youngest Tasmanians from a rare but deadly disease, while ensuring no family is out of pocket," the Premier said.

"We're continuing to reach in where we can, to provide relief to Tasmanian families who are facing cost-of-living pressures.

"Meningococcal B is a serious and dangerous disease, which is now the most common cause of invasive meningococcal in children, adolescents and young adults.

"While all age groups are susceptible to meningococcal disease, infants are 17 times more likely to be infected than the general population.

"The vaccine is already available to Tasmanians at a cost, but we know the cost is too high for many families.

"We don't want families living in fear of this deadly disease, and our new program will remove this financial barrier.

"This isn't just about prevention; it is a smart investment. Avoiding even one case can save our health system up to $10 million in lifetime costs, including hospital care, educational support, and disability services.

"While Labor and the Greens argue, we've been delivering better healthcare, more housing, and responsible cost-of-living relief.

"And we've got more to do.

"But here's the truth: we can't finish the job without a majority Liberal Government.

"Let's get on with it.

"Let's finish the job for Tasmania."
