PTV Route 96 tram upgrade on Nicholson Street

Public Transport Victoria (PTV) and Yarra Trams are closing Nicholson Street (between Johnston Street and Barkly Street) in January 2020 to build six new accessible tram stops and replace overhead wires and tracks.

Major works will run 24 hours a day from 1 to 20 January 2020, with preparatory and close-out works occurring before and after this period.

The new accessible stops will enable people of all abilities to use the Route 96 tram safely and easily, and are another step towards creating Melbourne's first fully accessible tram route.

We acknowledge that these works will have a significant impact on local amenity, traffic and car parking. While Council has limited influence over this State Government project, we are working closely with PTV and Yarra Trams to ensure that construction impacts on Yarra residents and businesses are minimised.

Car parking

Like much of Yarra, parking in this area is already heavily occupied, with no capacity for additional vehicles. As such, we are unable to issue parking permits to residents during major works.

We kindly ask drivers to park legally and safely at all times, and will take PTV's major works into consideration with respect to parking enforcement in the project area.
