Pub Creation Turns National Icon: 36-Year Journey

Miami Bakehouse

Key Facts:

Miami Bakehouse proudly claimed two national category titles this year, making them the best in Australia for their Traditional Pastie and the best Gourmet Apple Pie, an Apple and Raspberry combination.

A quintessentially Aussie pie competition began as all great Aussie inventions probably have done – over a drink at the pub! It is fitting that this competition has stood the test of time since it was conceived in 1989, and is in its 36th Year.

This year's Official Great Aussie Pie Competition has been held at Fine Food Australia in Sydney this week. The event is bigger than ever, attracting more than 1,500 entries from bakeries across the country.

Across four days of serious judging, pies, sausage rolls and pasties are put under the spotlight. There are 17 judges, set up in pairs with the oversight of the head or chief Judge. These experts carefully examine each entry on strict criteria, including pastry quality, baked finish, stability, filling consistency, flavour, aroma, and, in gourmet categories, creativity and innovation. The judging culminates in the Overall wins, where the very best baking in each category is crowned the winner.

Miami Bakehouse Involvement

Miami Bakehouse proudly claimed two national category titles this year, making them the best in Australia for their Traditional Pastie and the best Gourmet Apple Pie, an Apple and Raspberry combination.

Miami Bakehouse has been part of this competition for more than 21 years and the team was thrilled to receive two category titles and an impressive 11 medals for its 11 entries at this year's competition. Among the winning recipes were the Traditional Pastie, Coconut Chicken Curry, Ginger Chilli Pork, Sri Lankan Prawn Curry, Kangaroo & Couscous, Classic Steak, Sausage Roll and Moroccan Lamb. Along with these savoury flavours, they entered a Classic Apple and Cinnamon pie along with the overall Apple and Raspberry recipe.

Creativity and Flair

Known for their bold approach to flavour and pie recipes, Miami Bakehouse bakers have developed a reputation for pushing the boundaries of what a pie can be. From being the first to introduce a Reuben Pie, inspired by the famous New York sandwich (a gold medal winner in its debut year), to other unique recipes like the Cheeseburger Pie, Kangaroo & Juniper Berry Pie, and the all-time favourite Garlic Prawn Pie.

Simone Sanders, co-owner of Miami Bakehouse said,

"Competitions are hard work, but they inspire us to keep innovating and pushing the idea of what a pie can be.

"I've got the best job as Official Taster! It's a joy to work with our team and create new recipes and test them out. The accolades are a proud moment for all of us, but the real winners are our customers, who get to enjoy these as our Pies of the Week."

About us:

These latest results add to Miami Bakehouse's record of more than 1,100 national and state awards, achieved over 21 years of competing at the national level. With another successful competition season complete, the team is already looking ahead and are back in the bakery creating new recipes to delight pie lovers across Western Australia.
