NSW Trustee & Guardian is calling on the people of NSW to take a stand against elder abuse on World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, this Tuesday 15 June.
It is estimated that 185,000 older people in Australia experience some form of abuse or neglect each year.*
Still, many cases go unreported says NSW Trustee & Guardian CEO, Adam Dent.
"Research tells us that most elder abuse occurs within families and may explain why many cases go underreported," said Mr Dent.
"That's why it's important that we, as a community, are on the lookout for early signs that something isn't right."
Elder abuse can take many forms including financial, physical, psychological, sexual and neglect, with financial abuse the most common. Large bank withdrawals, access to bank accounts being blocked, belongings disappearing, or changes to Wills are all warning signs to look out for.
"Putting a stop to elder abuse starts by knowing what to look for. Take notice if an older person doesn't have money for essentials like food or clothing, or is unable to pay bills," said Mr Dent.
A NSW Government agency, NSW Trustee & Guardian supports thousands of vulnerable NSW citizens each year who have fallen victim to elder abuse by being appointed as their guardian or financial manager by a court or tribunal.
The agency also supports the people of NSW to plan for their future legal, health and financial decisions by providing Will making, Power of Attorney and Enduring Guardianship services.
"Elder abuse is of significant concern as Australia's ageing population grows," said Mr Dent.
"That's why we encourage people to take steps now to protect themselves by preparing a Will, Enduring Power of Attorney and Enduring Guardianship and appointing someone they trust to make decisions for them, in the event they can't in the future."
