Quality of Monash subjects recognised in prestigious ShanghaiRanking's GRAS 2021

The quality and international reputation of Monash University continues to be recognised, with 13 subjects ranked in the global top 50 and a further 10 rated first in Australia, in the 2021 ShanghaiRanking's Global Rankings of Academic Subjects (GRAS) 2021.

Continuing last year's excellent results, of the subjects ranked in the top 50, eight are in Engineering, three in Medical Sciences, one in Natural Sciences, and one in Social Sciences. Monash is ranked first in Australia in 10 subjects, one more than in 2020.

The rankings provide comparative analysis on the performance of universities globally across 54 subjects and five broad subject areas.

Monash is ranked first in Australia for Metallurgical Engineering, Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Education, Chemical Engineering and Chemistry, while ranked equal first in Business Administration, Economics, Materials Science and Engineering, Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, and Communication.

Monash's best-performing subject globally was Mining and Mineral Engineering, which jumped three places to sixth globally and second nationally. Metallurgical Engineering is ranked 10th globally and first nationally.

The University's Nursing program soared 13 places to be ranked sixth globally and third in Australia, while Energy Science and Engineering and Public Health rose four and nine places, respectively, to be ranked 37th in the world.

Monash University's President and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Margaret Gardner AC, said the results showcased the University's world-leading offerings in education and research.

"The University's strong results in the GRAS demonstrate the scale and breadth of our excellence in teaching, learning and research across many disciplines, from Nursing and Public Health, to Engineering, and Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences," Professor Gardner said.

"Our strong global networks, industry collaborations, and commitment to commercialising research is key to this success."
