The Albanese Government is continuing to deliver digital equity with free community Wi-Fi to be rolled out to more First Nations communities in Queensland.
Thanks to $1.6 million in Australian Government funding and almost $180,000 from the Queensland Government, the remote communities of Mapoon, Lockhart River and Napranum will have access to free Wi-Fi in public spaces.
Free community Wi-Fi improves access to healthcare, education and training while strengthening opportunities for cultural and community connection.
The funding is part of the Government's $20 million First Nations Community Wi-Fi Program, which is rolling out in up to 53 remote communities across Australia.
These remote Queensland communities join those previously announced across Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory.
This program builds on the success of the NBN Community Wi-Fi Program, which has delivered free community Wi-Fi to 23 remote communities across Western Australia, South Australia, Queensland and the Northern Territory.
Access to free, reliable internet services supports more equitable digital participation for First Nations people. These initiatives are part of the Government's $68 million package to support First Nations digital inclusion and advance our work towards Target 17 of the National Agreement on Closing the Gap.
