  • Relocated add to social housing in Woodridge
  • Part of Miles Government's Homes for Queenslanders target of 53,500 new social homes by 2046
  • Relocating houses is faster and can be made available in shorter time for social housing

Five relocated homes are being added to social housing stocks in Logan to provide a safe new start for families.

Four three-bedroom homes and one four-bedroom homes were set to be demolished for the Logan rail upgrade, but have since been relocated to Woodridge and Kingston to be repurposed for social housing.

They join close to 1,000 social homes currently under construction across Queensland as part of the Miles Government's plans to ramp up its social housing Big Build.

Earlier this year the government outlined a target of 53,500 more social homes by 2046 through its Homes for Queenslanders plan.

The social housing target in Homes for Queenslanders was informed by modelling done by the Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute.

The modelling incorporates historical and predictive analysis, including population growth and social and economic factors, to inform social housing need, and is the first of its kind in Australia.

Quotes attributable to Housing Minister Meaghan Scanlon:

"To build more homes, faster – we know we need to do things differently, including the way we build them.

"We're building thousands of new houses across Queensland and we will leave no stone unturned to deliver more Homes for Queenslanders.

"We've saved homes set to be demolished for our big Logan and Gold Coast rail upgrade and reused them for social housing to help families like Tanika's.

"Under the LNP social housing went backwards by 428 homes, and they sacked 1,600 QBuild workers.

"Now they're saying our Homes for Queenslanders plan is too much – so the question they must answer is what will they cut? Is it relocated homes like these?"

Quotes attributable to tenant Tanika Kelly, who moved to Queensland with her two children, little more than a year ago, for a fresh start closer to family:

"We lived in motels for the first three months with the help of local homelessness support service HART4000, while I applied for easily more than 100 rentals. Signing up for RentConnect with (local HSC officer) Jade helped me finally secure a lease.

"But I'm on limited income, I couldn't find work and didn't have the room to bring in a housemate to help with the rent going forward, so this beautiful new home is just fantastic.

"We're all feeling so much more relaxed and settled. My daughter is enjoying school for the first time in ages and my little boy can ride his bike and play ball safely in the massive fenced yard.

"We're going to put in a vege patch and, now, I can look for work again or start establishing my home nail salon. Jade continues to be so supportive and reassuring.''
