Making smart investments in Atlantic Canada’s communities to help them take advantage of sport tourism opportunities will bring more visitors to our shores and create good middle-class jobs. Thanks to support from the Government of Canada, the Town of Quispamsis is co-hosting the 2018 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge taking place November 3 – 10, 2018 in both Quispamsis and Saint John. The tournament is expected to bring a significant economic boost to the region.

Alaina Lockhart, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Tourism, Official Languages and La Francophonie and Member of Parliament for Fundy Royal, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), joined His Worship Gary Clark, Mayor of Quispamsis, today for the announcement.

The Government of Canada, through ACOA’s Innovative Communities Fund (ICF), is providing the Town of Quispamsis with a non-repayable contribution of $75,000 towards the organization of the tournament.

This investment builds on commitments made by the Government of Canada and the four Atlantic Provinces to drive economic growth in the region through the Atlantic Growth Strategy by helping the region’s tourism industry attract more visitors and create new jobs across the region. This bold new approach is in line with Canada’s Tourism Vision, which seeks to make Canada a top-ten global tourism destination by 2025.

“The Government of Canada is making strategic investments that build on competitive regional advantages. Through ACOA, our government is proud to support projects like this one for the Town of Quispamsis that promote diversification, build vitality in communities and enhance the regional economy.”

- The Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for ACOA

“Promoting tourism has tremendous benefits for our region. Attracting visitors for world-class sporting events like the World U17 Hockey Challenge means more overnights stays, meals in local restaurants and support for local businesses. It also adds a whole lot of vibrancy to our communities. Our government is committed to building a prosperous future for Atlantic Canada, one that will allow our children to live and prosper in the beautiful place we call home. Congratulations to the Host Organizing Committee for their hard work and dedication to bring this prestigious event to our region.”

- Alaina Lockhart, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Tourism, Official Languages and La Francophonie and Member of Parliament for Fundy Royal

"This investment from ACOA will help ensure that Quispamsis – and the Greater Saint John region as a whole – will be well received by our visitors who will join us from across Canada, the United States, Russia, Sweden, Finland and the Czech Republic."

- Gary Clark, Mayor of Quispamsis
