The Royal Australian College of GPs (RACGP) has welcomed the Western Australian Government's announcement that older Western Australians living in residential aged care will receive free RSV immunisation through a new $2.6 million state-funded program.
For the first time, the Arexvy RSV vaccine, which normally costs around $300 privately, will be made available at no cost to Western Australians aged 65 and over residing in aged care facilities. The Department of Health estimates 15,000 aged care residents will be vaccinated this year.
The RACGP has long advocated for equitable access to immunisation for older Australians, particularly those in aged care where the burden of respiratory illness is highest.
RSV is a highly contagious respiratory virus that can cause severe illness in older adults, particularly those with existing cardiac or respiratory conditions or weakened immune systems. In 2025, Western Australia recorded 12,804 RSV cases, with around one third occurring in people aged over 65, many of whom required hospital care.
RACGP WA Chair Dr Ramya Raman welcomed the initiative as a vital step in protecting vulnerable older Western Australians and alleviating pressure on the health system.
"This is a significant and much needed investment in preventive healthcare for older Western Australians," she said.
"RSV can be life-threatening for older adults, particularly those in aged care. Providing this vaccine free of charge will prevent serious illness, reduce hospital admissions, and protect residents who are most at risk.
"GPs see firsthand the impact that respiratory infections have every winter. A free RSV vaccine program for older adults, alongside WA's successful infant immunisation program, strengthens protection across generations and fosters healthier communities.
"The RACGP has been advocating to the government on RSV vaccinations for some time, and we are delighted to see the Cook government deliver on this priority."
Dr Raman highlighted the broader benefits for system-wide resilience during peak winter demand.
"Vaccination remains one of the most effective ways to prevent avoidable hospital presentations," she said.
"This initiative will protect individuals while easing pressure on emergency departments and hospital wards when they are busiest.
"The RACGP welcomes the Cook Government's commitment to preventive health. Offering free, evidence-based access to high-quality vaccines for vulnerable groups is a smart investment that will save lives and strengthen our entire health system."
The RACGP looks forward to working with the WA Government, aged care providers, and primary care clinicians to ensure a smooth rollout of the program across the state.
