Rail Trail Bridge Renewal Works - Dalyston

Bass Coast Shire Council is getting ready to begin important upgrade works on a bridge along the Bass Coast Rail Trail near Dalyston, helping to keep this much-loved community asset safe and accessible for years to come.

The works will take place on the Rail Trail approximately 300 metres east of Daly Street, Dalyston (around 2.1 km west of Lower Powlett Road), with construction scheduled to begin on Monday 27 April 2026 and expected to be completed by mid-June 2026, subject to weather and site conditions.

This project will see the renewal of the existing timber bridge deck, replacing it with more durable composite materials and upgrading supporting structures. The bridge has served the community well over many years and these improvements will ensure it continues to provide a safe and reliable connection for walkers, cyclists and visitors enjoying the trail between Phillip Island and Wonthaggi.

The Bass Coast Rail Trail is a popular destination for locals and visitors alike, supporting healthy, active lifestyles and connecting our communities. These works will help maintain that experience while also supporting local jobs and contractors.

What to expect during works

To safely carry out the upgrades, a section of the Rail Trail between Lower Powlett Road and Daly Street will be temporarily closed. Clearly signed detours will be in place, with QR codes available along the trail to guide users.

During construction, the community may notice:

  • Temporary trail closures and detours
  • Increased activity from construction vehicles and machinery
  • Some noise and vibration during works

Council and its contractor will work to minimise disruption as much as possible and will keep nearby residents, businesses and user groups informed throughout the project. Emergency access will be maintained at all times.

We appreciate the community's patience and understanding while these works are carried out.
