Raptor Squad detectives have charged two men following an investigation into the alleged shooting of a man in the state's Hunter Region.
About 6.40pm on Wednesday 5 July 2023, emergency services were called to an address on Bundabah Street in Karuah – about 50km northeast of Newcastle – following reports a man had been shot.
On arrival, police were told two men had arrived at the location and allegedly shot the 55-year-old man, before stealing a Rolex watch and fleeing the scene.
The man was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition.
Officers attached to Port Stephens Hunter Police District commenced an investigation before it was referred to State Crime Command's Raptor Squad North.
Following inquiries, about 12.55pm yesterday (Thursday 6 July 2023), Raptor Squad detectives – assisted by the Tactical Operations Unit – stopped a car on Ada Street in Belmont and arrested the driver, a 40-year-old man.
During a search of the man, police located and seized a knife. He was taken to hospital under police guard in a stable condition.
About 2.10pm, officers executed a search warrant at an address on Terence Avenue in Lake Munmorah, where they arrested a 59-year-old man.
During a subsequent search of the home, police located and seized a number of items relevant to their investigation. Those items will undergo further forensic examination.
Both men were taken to Belmont Police Station, where the younger man was charged with robbery in company cause wounding (grievous bodily harm), carry cutting weapon upon apprehension, possess unregistered unauthorised pistol in public place, and acquire etc pistol-subject to firearms prohibition order.
The older man was charged with robbery in company cause wounding (grievous bodily harm).
They were refused bail to appear before Belmont Local Court today (Friday 7 July 2023).
