The Tasmanian Government and waste industry representatives came together in Hobart to develop an Emissions Reduction and Resilience Plan for the waste sector.
This is the second of seven sector workshops being held to develop industry-specific plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, to meet the State's legislated 2030 net zero target. The first sector workshop focussed on transport emissions.
Minister for the Environment and Climate Change, Roger Jaensch said: "Workshops like this with key participants from each of the identified sectors will be held progressively across 2023 and early 2024, with plans for each sector to be released over the next year and a half."
"The plans will support emissions reduction, guide the transition to a low emissions economy and build resilience to climate-related risks across key sectors of the state's economy.
"Priorities and opportunities identified in the workshop will be incorporated into a draft Emissions Reduction and Resilience Plan for the waste sector, which we expect to release for public comment later this year.
"This work will build on the efforts we are already making in the waste sector including investment of $6 million to improve and increase organic waste reprocessing across Tasmania, and $3 million to attract industry investment in sustainable solutions for the recovery of end-of-life tyres.
"We are also working with our agriculture, energy, heavy industry, forestry and government sectors to develop Emissions Reduction and Resilience Plans for their operations.
"By identifying practical solutions, sector-by-sector, we can tailor our plans to work to the strengths and opportunities presented by each industry.
"Our Government is committed to working with businesses, industries and the community to meet our 2030 emissions target and make Tasmania a successful low-emissions economy, protecting our environment, our brand and jobs for future generations."
