'Reflect' on road safety

Queensland Road Safety Week
Mayor Darren Power and Senior Constable Dave Gibson urge locals to think about road safety.

City of Logan residents are urged to look in the mirror and take charge of their own safety on the roads.

Logan City Council is again supporting Queensland Road Safety Week from August 21-26. This year's theme is 'Road safety starts with me'.

Council's City Administration Centre in Logan Central and the adjacent Logan Entertainment Centre will be lit yellow for the cause.

Mayor Darren Power asks all residents to think about how they could lower the road toll.

"Road accidents have a huge impact on many Queenslanders every day," Cr Power said.

"We all have a vital part to play in keeping each other safe on the roads. Motorists - particularly motorcycle riders - bike and scooter riders and pedestrians. Everyone should be doing their bit.

"All road users should be able to get home safely to their families."

As part of Queensland Road Safety Week, a road safety expo is on at Logan Central Plaza on Saturday, August 26, from 9am-12pm.

The expo, which will be attended by local police, will focus on the potential impacts of the fatal five - speeding, seat belts, drink/drug driving, fatigue and driver distraction.

Council is working on several fronts to improve road safety in Logan.

Last year, it endorsed a Road Safety Strategy for Logan 2022-2026.

The strategy promotes local and state road safety education campaigns and supports schools in discussing road safety issues in classrooms.

Council also delivers the SafeRoads4Logan program - a partnership with Queensland Police, the Department of Transport and Main Roads, Queensland Health and RACQ.

Last year, 297 people lost their lives on Queensland roads, and around 8000 were seriously injured.
