Mornington Peninsula Shire is inviting the community to come together to celebrate Refugee Week (14-20 June).
Refugee Week 2026 recognises the strength, resilience and contributions of refugees through the theme, 'A Million Stories'.
Locally, residents are encouraged to connect through storytelling, shared experiences and community events.
As part of the week, the Shire is hosting and supporting a range of initiatives that highlight the power of stories to bring people together.
Acting Mayor Paul Pingiaro said: "Refugee Week is a chance for us to recognise the diverse stories that make up our community and to celebrate the contributions of people from all backgrounds. By creating spaces for connection, conversation and shared experiences, we're helping to build a more inclusive and welcoming Peninsula for everyone."
Community members are encouraged to take part in simple, meaningful ways by sharing a meal, exchanging stories or connecting with others about culture and lived experience.
As part of Refugee Week, the Shire acknowledges the work of local community group Grandmothers for Refugees, which recently led a food drive with donations going to the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre.
Key events:
- A memoir writing workshop with Refugee Council of Australia national ambassador Edita Mujkić and Greek Storytimes, both at Mornington Library.
- New Multicultural Collaborative Network launch - bringing together community groups and local services to strengthen connections and support multicultural communities. The network aims to share information and resources, amplify multicultural voices and support a safe, welcoming and inclusive Peninsula. The first meeting will be held on Tuesday, 16 June 2-3.30pm at the Rosebud Shire office, Besgrove St.
