In April 2026, we released the terms of reference for the review of the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting (NGER) scheme Method 2 for open-cut coal mines.
Facilities use Method 2 to estimate fugitive greenhouse gas emissions from open-cut coal mines in Australia. We want to ensure the method:
- remains fit for purpose
- reflects the most up to date science, data, technologies and practices.
This review progresses implementation of the Australian Government's response to the 2023 Climate Change Authority review of the NGER Scheme.
We are holding a webinar to share information on:
- the purpose of the review
- the development, requirements and implementation of Method 2
- related compliance, monitoring and enforcement activities
- the issues the review is addressing
- how the review will be undertaken
- how stakeholders can engage with the review.
