In August 2026, energy regulators from 13 Pacific countries came together in Brisbane for training. The training was part of the Office of the Pacific Energy Regulators Alliance (OPERA).
Australia and New Zealand delivered the workshops with the University of New South Wales. The program was supported through the Australia-Pacific Partnership for Energy Transition (APPET). It brought together participants from government, universities and industry.
The two-day workshops covered:
- the basics of energy regulation
- setting power prices
- protecting consumers
- using and collecting data
- service reliability and quality
- transitioning to renewable energy.
Workshop attendees collaborated on challenges, shared knowledge, and built connections.
While in Brisbane, participants also attended a conference hosted by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission and Australian Energy Regulator. They met with and learned from regulators across the region.
Regulation is vital to the Pacific's energy transition. It helps ensure the region can benefit from new opportunities. It also supports investment, protects consumers, promotes reliable energy systems, and helps improve affordability.
We are helping to build stronger renewable energy systems across the region. The training puts into action a commitment made by Australia and New Zealand Climate Change Ministers in 2025.
