Release of Nurse Practitioner Workforce Plan

Department of Health

The government has released the Nurse Practitioner Workforce Plan. The plan aims to enhance the accessibility and delivery of person-centred care for all Australian communities through a well-distributed, culturally safe NP workforce. It provides strategic directions for the next 10 years and beyond. It details how to remove the barriers currently facing the workforce and build the workforce numbers, all the while increasing access to care for all Australian communities.

The plan sets out 4 overarching outcomes:

  • Increase NP services across the country
  • Improve community awareness and knowledge of NP services
  • Support for NPs to work to their full scope of practice, and
  • Grow the NP workforce to reflect the diversity of the community and improve cultural safety.

We have developed the plan in consultation with consumers, NPs, health professionals, governments, First Nations people and other interested parties. The plan was developed under guidance from the Nurse Practitioner Steering Committee.
