This Thursday, 9 February, the English folk musician Eliza Carthy will be performing at the state-of-the-art Tung Auditorium.
Described by The Guardian as "the queen of English folk" she has had two Mercury Award nominated albums and was the first English traditional musician to be nominated for a BBC R3 Award for World Music. Eliza was awarded an MBE for services to folk music in 2014 and became the president of the English Folk Dance and Music Society in 2021.
Born into a formidable musical dynasty, her mother, the late Norma Waterson, was one of celebrated Yorkshire-based folk group The Watersons. Her father 81-year-old Martin Carthy is a hugely influential singer and guitarist.
Eliza joined the family business at a young age as a singer and violinist, playing with her parents as Waterson Carthy and with her mother, her aunt Lal and her cousin Marry as The Waterdaughters. Throughout her career she has performed across several styles and has collaborated with a wide range of musicians including Paul Weller, Linda Thompson, Roger McGuinn and Wilco.
Eliza will be performing songs from her new album Queen Of The Whirl with her band The Restitution - featuring re-recordings of some of her 'greatest hits' and audience-favourites from her incredible 30 year career.
