Retired officer charged over historical sexual assault

A retired police officer will face court today charged with a historical sexual assault alleged to have occurred in the late 1980s.

Officers from Lake Illawarra Police Area Command have been investigating a report that at some time in 1986-1987 the former officer, now aged 66, had sexual intercourse with a 14-year-old girl at his East Corrimal unit.

On Thursday 20 May 2021, the man was arrested in the Lake Illawarra area. He was taken to Wollongong Police Station where he was charged with sexual intercourse with child over 10 and under 16 years – under authority.

He was given conditional bail and will appear in Wollongong Local Court today (Thursday 27 May 2021).

The man was a Probationary Constable attached to a station in Southern Region when the offence is alleged to have occurred.
