RIVeR-LAC Project Unveils Open-Source River Tool

Conclusion and Final report of the project under the WMO HydroHub Innovation Call - Latin America and the Caribbean

The project titled "RIVeR-LAC" implemented by the National University of Córdoba (UNC) through the Hydraulics Linkage Center of the Faculty of Exact, Physical, and Natural Sciences (FCEFyN) of Argentina, in the context of the WMO HydroHub Innovation Call - Latin America and the Caribbean concluded in April 2025. The RIVeR-LAC project, supported by the WMO HydroHub and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), has contributed to improving hydrometric monitoring in Latin America and the Caribbean by promoting image-based techniques such as Large-Scale Particle Image Velocimetry (LSPIV). The project focused on developing accessible, open-source software, producing step-by-step guidelines, and testing the approach in diverse field conditions. With multilingual tools and regional training activities, RIVeR-LAC supports more inclusive and efficient streamflow monitoring practices in the region.

We are pleased to announce the publication of the final report of the RIVeR-LAC project, winner of the WMO HydroHub Innovation Call - Latin America and the Caribbean.

The awarded project advanced hydrometric monitoring in Latin America and the Caribbean through the development and implementation of Large-Scale Particle Image Velocimetry (LSPIV) technology. It stood out for its accessible, open-source, user-friendly approach and potential to generate real-world impact in the field of hydrological monitoring in the region.

Implemented with dedication and collaboration over the past year, the project demonstrates how innovation can be translated into practical, field-ready solutions. The final report presents key outcomes, challenges encountered, lessons learned, and recommendations for sustainability and future scaling or adaptation of this innovation in other contexts.

RIVeR-LAC webinar

To further disseminate the project results, and share insights into the use of image-based river monitoring technology, a public webinar was held on 8 of April 2025. During the session, the project team presented and demonstrated their work and responded to questions from the audience. This was a great opportunity to learn more about the project from concept to implementation. The webinar was attended by almost 250 participants.

The webinar recording is now available online (in Spanish, with English and French subtitles).

What's next?

With the RIVeR-LAC project now successfully concluded, it is crucial to ensure its impact extends well beyond its initial scope.

The project will be featured in an upcoming HydroHub Innovation Workshop and Strategic Discussion on surface velocimetry in hydrology (scheduled for May 2025 in Costa Rica). The workshop will provide an opportunity to train staff from NMHS of the Latin America and Caribbean region on the methodology and software. This project will also be part of a strategic discussion, aiming at setting up the way forward, potential upscale and operationalization of this innovation.
